WPD opens UK’s largest flexibility market

Western Power Distribution (WPD) is aiming to procure 334MW of demand response services which, it says, is the largest amount from any UK network operator.

On 7 January, WPD set out that it would procure the desired flexibility across its network through multiple channels – including the Piclo platform, the Cornwall Local Energy Market and its own Flexible Power brand. The requirements cover 175 primary substations across a fifth of WPD’s network. It spans 42 zones in England and Wales, all of which have a need within 2020-21. WPD has also signposted ongoing needs to 2024-25.

An invitation to tender (ITT) will be issued to all participants who have registered their interest and passed a pre-qualification stage by 3 February with the ITT deadline falling on 13 March. The procurement results will then be published on 3 April.

Network Strategy Manager, Ben Godfrey, said: “Our fifth and largest procurement round delivers on our commitment to open our ED1 load related reinforcement requirements up to the market. The move to a decarbonised energy system is changing the way we plan and operate our network. Having flexibility in these areas is crucial in enabling enable us to optimise investment and respond quickly to uncertainty.”
